Privacy Policy

Litcadia is a book tracker made by readers. This page explains, in plain language, what we collect, why, and what you can ask us to do about it.
What we collect
Your account: email, username, display name (if you set one), password (stored scrambled, never readable by us) and birthday.
What you add: shelves, reviews, ratings, progress, posts, comments, LitQuest entries, series guides, your profile photo and anything else you choose to put on the site.
Where you came from: when you first visit, your browser remembers roughly how you found us (for example Reddit, Discord, or typing the address). If you create an account, we save that one label on it so we know which communities bring in readers. It is kept in your browser's own storage, not in a cookie, and is not shared with anyone. We don't do this for visitors in Europe.
Visit counts: we use Google Analytics to count page views (see Cookies below).
Technical basics: like any website, our host sees your IP address and browser details when you load a page. We use them to keep the site running and to limit abuse, such as many accounts being created from one connection.
Why we use it
To run your account and the features you use, to show your activity to the people you have chosen to share it with, to email you things you need (such as confirming your address or resetting a password), to keep the community safe, and to understand how the site is used so we can improve it. We do not sell your information, and we do not share your information with advertisers.
Who can see it
Other members can see your username, display name, photo, shelves and anything you post, as set by the privacy options in your settings. Visitors who are not logged in see very little: a profile shows only a sign-in prompt.
Your email address is never shown to other members. Moderators can see account details needed to manage the Litcadia community.
Reviews and book pages are public so they can be found on search engines.
Cookies
A cookie is a small note a website saves in your browser. We use only what the site needs to work, such as keeping you logged in and remembering your display settings.
We do not use advertising cookies. We use Google Analytics to count visits. For visitors in Europe it is set up so it does not store any cookies on your device and only receives anonymous page-view counts. Elsewhere it uses cookies to tell visits apart. We do not use it to build a profile of you or to show you ads.
Other companies that handle data for us
Our hosting and database provider, which stores the site and its data.
An email service, which sends our account emails.
Cloud file storage, which holds uploaded images such as profile photos.
Google Analytics, for anonymous visit counts.
These services may process data in other countries, including the United States. They act on our instructions and only for the purposes above.
Your choices
You can change most of what you have shared, and who can see it, in your settings.
You can ask for a copy of the personal information we hold about you, ask us to correct it, or ask us to erase it. If you are in the UK or EU, these are your rights under data protection law.
Deleting your account in Settings removes your email, username, password, birthday, photo and profile details, along with your friendships and notifications. Reviews, ratings and comments you wrote stay on the site but show as "Anonymous", with nothing left that links them to you. If you want a specific review or comment removed completely, contact us (see Contact) and tell us which one.
After an account is deleted we keep a small amount of limited information for security and to protect the community from abuse.
Children
Litcadia is not meant for children under 13, and we ask for your birthday at signup for that reason. If you think a child has made an account, tell us and we will remove it.
Contact
Members can open a ticket from the Help page, or message us on our Discord server. Please mention the username of the account your request is about.
Changes
If we change this policy in a way that matters, we will update the date at the top and tell members on the site.
