Trial by Fire and Water

Robert Bartlett

4.25

In trial by ordeal, the accused was subjected to some harsh test--holding hot iron, being cast into a pool of water--with guilt or innocence decided according to outcome. This work examines the practice of trial by ordeal in Christian societies, from its origination in the barbarian law codes to its last days of use as a test of witchcraft in Europe and America.
