There’s something magical, sad, and completely unique about this book. Elif Shafak has such a beautiful way with words; this story is layered with grief, love, family, history, and healing, all told in such an original and poetic voice. I didn’t expect to become so attached to a fig tree, but here we are. The chapters from the tree’s perspective were one of the highlights for me; so thoughtful and unexpectedly moving. I loved this unusual narrator and the way it grounded the story. What really stood out, though, was how the novel brought the pain and history of Greek and Turkish Cypriot communities into the light. I learned so much without ever feeling like I was being taught. The characters - especially Ada - were vivid and memorable, and I felt deeply for them. This is one of those stories that quietly leaves a mark. Painful, yes, but also hopeful. Hug-worthy. I can’t wait to read more of Shafak’s work.
