Thank you to NetGalley and Dutton Books for Young Readers for this eARC in exchange for an honest review! ——— This is the first book I’ve read by Isabel Cañas and consider me immensely impressed! The depth with which our characters are fleshed out is astounding, the setting atmospheric, and the story itself is thematically jarring. It poses great questions about the lengths we go for those we are loyal to, and how our loyalties shift when self-preservation takes priority. For a book I read mostly at nighttime, the horror elements do not disappoint. The suspense builds, the uncertainty and unrest seep into every shadowed place. Though I enjoyed the pacing throughout most of this book, I do think the ending felt rushed. That selfish part of me wishes for just a little more. Still, a really well-done work, especially as a debut into the YA genre.
