The Call of the Night Rider

Albert Lee

4.25

In a sunlit meadow outside a walled city, Margaret Byrckmann meets a weary foreign traveler who has arrived too late to enter before the gates close. Her pity quickly overrides disappointment when he collapses from hunger and exhaustion, and she and Herman revive him with food and drink before carrying him to safety. Only later do they learn the truth: the stranger is William Tyndale, the hunted English reformer and friend of Martin Luther.

What begins as an act of Christian charity becomes a dangerous secret, and the household soon realizes they may be sheltering a man marked for arrest by the authorities. As Margaret moves through the rain-swept streets on a fearful errand, she overhears Cochlaeus, the notorious heresy hunter, boasting that Tyndale is in the city and may be translating Scripture there. The discovery fills the family with dread, but they silently resolve not to betray him, even after hearing Tyndale's fervent prayer for time to finish his Bible translation so ordinary people can read God's Word.

Meanwhile, a rescue party follows Engel through a hidden entrance in a hollow tree, then through secret chambers and underground passages beneath a hostile castle, creeping ever closer to the imprisoned reformer while danger closes in from every side.
