The delicious bodyguard romance of From Blood and Ash meets the delightful charm of The Princess Bride in this cozy fantasy romance from New York Times bestselling author T. Kingfisher

Halla has unexpectedly inherited the estate of the wealthy distant uncle she's been caring for for the past decade. Unfortunately, she is also saddled with money-hungry relatives full of devious plans for how to wrest the inheritance away from her.

While hiding in her bedroom to escape her family, Halla inspects the ancient sword that's been collecting dust on the wall since before she moved in. On a whim, she pulls it down and unsheaths it—and suddenly a man appears in her bedroom. His name is Sarkis, he tells her, and he is an immortal warrior trapped in a prison of enchanted steel.

Sarkis is sworn to protect whoever wields the sword, and for Halla—a most unusual wielder—he finds himself not fending off grand armies and deadly assassins but instead everything from kindly-seeming bandits to roving inquisitors to her own in-laws. But as Halla and Sarkis become closer, they overlook the biggest threat of all—the sword itself.

I really enjoyed this book. I love the fact that T. kingfishers stories involve older characters and the humour is just so good and exactly what a was looking for. It did drag a little bit for me in the middle, I didn’t feel like much was happening when it was just them on that same road for so long. I still really enjoyed this though, it was definitely a cozy romantasy and I am excited to read the next one.

*✨ 3 stars ✨* Post-read thoughts: Ok, I really don't think T. Kingfisher is for me. I've tried several books of hers and they've all been pretty meh, except Paladin's Grace. Halla unexpectedly inherits her great-uncle’s estate, much to the horror of her greedy relatives. While hiding from the family drama, she unsheathes an ancient sword and accidentally summons Sarkis, an immortal warrior bound to protect whoever wields it. What follows is a charming and chaotic adventure filled with danger, family scheming, and an unexpected romance. This was a wholesome read, and one thing T. Kingfisher consistently does well is humor and banter. Her dialogue is witty, and the interactions between characters are often genuinely charming. That said, for me, the wholesome nature and humor wasn’t quite enough to carry the story. I really appreciate that T. Kingfisher tends to write older protagonists, because that’s something I’m always looking for. Unfortunately, despite their ages, her characters often end up feeling much younger and a bit more immature than I would expect. There was one moment where the main character essentially weaponizes a “playing dumb” tactic to intimidate an enemy, and instead of finding it clever, I found it a little cringe. While the journey these characters go on is ultimately worthwhile, it felt much longer than it needed to be to the point that it felt repetitive. I found it difficult to stay invested in the FMC’s relatively low-stakes side quest to reclaim her inheritance. I guess I wanted a bit more from the plot to heighten the intensity of the romance, if that makes. It genuinely pains me that I haven’t been able to fully connect with T. Kingfisher’s writing, especially because so many readers absolutely adore her books. But at the end of the day, it really comes down to personal preference. Halla is a brilliant fmc, I love that she’s 36 and a widow but still has a sense of humour, her constant yapping is entertaining and cringeworthy in the best way The constant jokes about swords (comparing them to certain male appendages) made me chuckle many times, and I love that they became a recurring joke. This book had me simultaneously on the edge of my seat and giggling like a schoolgirl throughout and I wouldn’t change it for the world. The disappearing ~bodily fluids~ was a hilarious yet practical addition 😂 iykyk
