Soul Searching
Home is where the heart is—and this one is haunted.
#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • The author of the Rebel Blue Ranch series returns with a brand-new story, featuring a small-town upholsterer in need of a fresh start, a photographer whose life has come to a screeching halt . . . and the supernatural forces that bring them together.
Collins Cartwright does not want to go home. Sweetwater Peak, Wyoming, was supposed to be in her rearview mirror, but when she finds out a developer is trying to buy her parents’ antiques shop out from under them, she doesn’t have a choice—at least, that’s what she tells her family. They don’t need to know she’s lost her job and is out of money. Or that the ghosts who have always been her companions have recently gone silent.
But just because she’s returned home doesn’t mean she has to stay with her parents or crash on her twin sister’s couch. Lucky for her, the new-to-town upholsterer has a room for rent above his store. Unluckily, it is absolutely crawling with more ghosts who are freezing her out. And Collins hates being ignored.
Brady Cooper is absolutely and totally fine. Seriously, there’s no secret reason why he decided to uproot his life and suddenly move to Sweetwater Peak. He just needed a change of pace. At least that’s what he tells himself. And everyone else.
When he agrees to let the elusive Collins Cartwright stay in his spare room, he doesn’t know that she’s absolutely bonkers—constantly talking to herself and having conversations with no one—or that she looked like that. But as they begin to get closer, the lines between them start to blur, leaving both of them—and the ghosts who have been pushing them together—wondering whether their temporary arrangement could be something more permanent.

Wow, this is by far Sages best book that I have read yet. So good! Love the ghosty paranormal vibes, narrators were fantastic, and the characters were all well done. I love the flaws and complicated family dynamics. I feel like theres a lot more to come from this spookily cozy lil town and I am here for it. The cover work is absolutely gorgeous, very rarely will I buy a book without reading, but this one I had a good feeling about and glad that I was not wrong. 10/10 🌶️ 2.5/5 - A bit of a slow burn, but the build up was so lovingly done, also best of all... no third act breakup.

This book was a "right place, right time" book for me; I can't guarantee that if I'd read it at another point in my life I would have liked this as much as I did, but here we are. For me, the standout of this book (as it is with all Lyla Sage books) was the characters. I loved that Collins was a little lost and didn't know how to ask for help or be vulnerable, and I loved that Brady was a quietly confident and steady presence who was able to help her open up to become a better version of herself. I'm someone who firmly believes that your romantic partner should be your best friend; because of that, I just adored Brady and Collins's dynamic. I loved that they joked with each other, were down for whatever as long as they were together, and wanted to spend every second in the other's presence. It was, to me, a perfect and wholesome representation of what romantic relationships should look like. Sweetwater Peak was such a great setting, perfectly striking the balance between literal ghost town and utterly normal dilapidated rural town. The author did a perfect job at pointing out the flaws and making it a little spooky without ever having it feel depressing or scary. I also really liked the ghosts that were present throughout the story, and the ways in which Lyla Sage departed from "traditional" ghost lore. It was fun that all they really wanted was to hang out. I also loved how the more prominent ghosts drove Collins's story forward while having ones of their own; it really incorporated into the story well and kept them from feeling like plot devices. I'd highly recommend this if you already like Lyla Sage's books or you're looking for something on the shorter side with a strong romance and spooky-ish elements. I cannot wait to see where the rest of the series goes! Thank you to NetGalley and Random House for the ARC of this book!
