Slewfoot: A Tale of Bewitchery
Set in Colonial New England, Slewfoot is a tale of magic and mystery, of triumph and terror as only dark fantasist Brom can tell it.
A spirited young Englishwoman, Abitha, arrives at a Puritan colony betrothed to a stranger – only to become quickly widowed when her husband dies under mysterious circumstances. All alone in this pious and patriarchal society, Abitha fights for what little freedom she can grasp onto, while trying to stay true to herself and her past.
Enter Slewfoot, a powerful spirit of antiquity newly woken ... and trying to find his own role in the world. Healer or destroyer? Protector or predator? But as the shadows walk and villagers start dying, a new rumor is whispered: Witch.
Both Abitha and Slewfoot must swiftly decide who they are, and what they must do to survive in a world intent on hanging any who meddle in the dark arts.

3/5 ⭐ 0/5 🌶️ Tropes: -Found family -Reluctant allies -Witty banter 📖My Thoughts Well once again, I was expecting something a bit more spooky but it didn't deliver. The book wasn't bad but a little weird and not my thing? I'd say it was more focused on religious ideologies and how the relative "bad guy" isn't so black and white. That we can all exist as one. That religion often times creates a separation between as beings. While I enjoy this thought process immensely, I wasn't really looking to read something like this. ⚠️Triggers Some of the triggers include violence, murder, torture, old-age religious torture tactics, and misogyny.

I think maybe this just wasn't for me. It was a little slow. Very whimsey/weird, but I struggled to push through. I expected this to be scarier based on some of the artwork, but it is what it is.

I expected more from this book. I really appreciated the vibes. Loved all the illustrations and the general adornment of pages, chapter beginnings, etc. But I'm afraid beyond those vibes the book failed to offer much substance. The story itself had a simple structure; the characterizations were very simple and straightforward, even for supposed ancient beings. If not for the gore and violence, I'd classify this book as YA. It was not bad... but as I said, I definitely had higher expectations. A more mystifying prose; the feel of ancient forces actually being such instead of a standard magic system... <spoiler>I'm really glad Abitha got her revenge though!</spoiler>
