Fresh from a brief stay at a psych hospital, reporter Camille Preaker faces a troubling assignment: she must return to her tiny hometown to cover the murders of two preteen girls. For years, Camille has hardly spoken to her neurotic, hypochondriac mother or to the half-sister she barely knows: a beautiful thirteen-year-old with an eerie grip on the town.
Now, installed in her old bedroom in her family's Victorian mansion, Camille finds herself identifying with the young victims—a bit too strongly. Dogged by her own demons, she must unravel the psychological puzzle of her own past if she wants to get the story—and survive this homecoming.

I am absolutely flabbergasted by how shit that was. So many WTAF moments that were soooo messed up.

A child weaned on poison considers harm a comfort. 💭 My thoughts Wow, second time reading this and it still blew my mind. Totally thought I remembered most of what happened and it would be fun to relive it, but I completely forgot the major twist at the end. Gillian's writing style, while wordy, is soooo horrifyingly good. I've always enjoyed real-life horror or horror based around mental illness.. While mental illness can be awful in so many ways, I appreciate the awareness it can bring when written in fiction. ⚠️ Trigger warnings Graphic: Self harm, Child death, Murder Moderate: Sexual assault, Rape, Sexual content Minor: Animal cruelty, Animal death, Vomit [Follow my Instagram](https://www.instagram.com/inkstainedemotions?igsh=aTh6eTZ6dGwxMXpy&utm_source=qr)

Oof… this was rough. I kinda didnt see this as “horror” at first but it really is it’s own dark kind of horror and some of the worst kind when kids are involved. This book made me cringe throughout the entire thing. I was physically uncomfortable reading it at times… I think for my future scary reads I will probably stick to less realistic things. Very well written though, I’m not sure I would watch the show at this point, but I do like the cast. Maybe one day. 🌶️1/5 - Vague enough, but so uncomfortable and awkward… so many trigger warnings too, and questionable scenes with questionable characters.

I was not expecting the plot twist in the last chapter. I thought I had everything put together and then all of a sudden I didn't. It was a very very vulgar read but it added to the psychological factor. It was thrilling and engaging! Left me guessing until the last minute and I do love the suspense of it. You follow Camille a reporter for a newspaper as she digs into the story of the missing (soon to turn into the murdered) girl from her old hometown. Along with the journey to discovering whodunnit you also glimpse into Camille's mental past. You see how messed up her life and story really is. This all leads to an understanding of why the killer did what they did. I recommend this to anyone who is a fan of physchological thrilling suspense.
