The Powerless Trilogy #1

Powerless

Lauren Roberts

4.52

A New York Times bestseller!

This explosive first book in the New York Times bestselling Powerless trilogy follows the forbidden romance between a powerful prince and an ordinary girl as they try to survive their kingdom’s grueling laws pitting them against each other.

She is the very thing he’s spent his whole life hunting.

He is the very thing she’s spent her whole life pretending to be.

Only the extraordinary belong in the kingdom of Ilya—the exceptional, the empowered, the Elites. The powers these Elites have possessed for decades were graciously gifted to them by the Plague, though not all were fortunate enough to both survive the sickness and reap the reward. Those born Ordinary are just that—ordinary. And when the king decreed that all Ordinaries be banished to preserve his Elite society, lacking an ability suddenly became a crime—making Paedyn Gray a felon by fate and a thief by necessity.

Surviving in the slums as an Ordinary is no simple task, and Paedyn knows this better than most. Having been trained by her father to be keenly observant since she was a child, Paedyn poses as a Psychic in the crowded city, blending in with the Elites as best she can to stay alive and out of trouble…easier said than done.

When Paedyn unsuspectingly saves one of Ilya’s princes, she finds herself thrown into the Purging Trials. The brutal competition exists to showcase the Elites’ powers—the very thing Paedyn lacks. If the Trials and the opponents within them don’t kill her, the prince she’s fighting feelings for certainly will if he discovers what she is…completely Ordinary.

Okay I actually really enjoyed this. I can’t wait for the second book, simply because of the cliffhanger in this one. I love Pae and Kai. I love them so, so much. I didn’t think I’d like this as much as I did, but I loved it. I don’t really have much to say in this review, which is sort of odd for me. I originally was gonna give this 4.5 stars, but after trying to write this review and being literally speechless, I’m giving it 5 stars!

This is now my absolute favourite book. I’m so mad at how it ended, but only because I know there is so much more story to be told and I have to wait to find out how this story ends. I CANNOT WAIT FOR THE RELEASE OF THE REST OF THE SERIES. The only negative thing i can say is that the chosen font for titles in this book is illegible, made me laugh

I found the beginning of the book slow paced but once the trials started it got much more excited. I love the drama, the love triangle and the layers to the story! Paedyn is such a strong girl, she deserves the world. Kai and Kitt have learned a lot but they also have so much growing to do, I am excited to read the next book.

Not sure what to really say about this... its very overhyped in my opinion, theres nothing really special about it, its not a bad read, I was invested and finished it, just pretty surface level. The narrators did a good job, kept me listening. I can absolutely see some cherry picking paralleled themes and elements from other books I've read, but it was different enough to just be its own thing, which is fine. 🌶️ 0/5 Tension was ok, and the romance was simple, little cliche here and there. Nothing really happens spice wise, which I knew going into, so I wasn't surprised... very clean YA.

I get why people like this... but it wasn't for me. I felt no connection to the main characters, they felt very one dimensional. I'm now sick of seeing the word(s) enforcer/future enforcer. WE GET IT. The world building was half baked as were the trials. Felt like snippets taken from other books, as if you're copying your friends homework but put it in your own words.. The power/magic system felt like gimmicky and not very special. At times, cringey dialogue. Darling didn't suit the main characters. Lastly predictable themes/outcomes, whilst not always bad... with everything else... it just added to my rating.
