Mary

Nat Cassidy

4.26

Nat Cassidy’s highly commercial, debut horror novel Mary, blends Midsommar with elements of American Psycho and a pinch of I'll Be Gone in the Dark.

Mary is a quiet, middle-aged woman doing her best to blend into the background. Unremarkable. Invisible. Unknown even to herself.

But lately, things have been changing inside Mary. Along with the hot flashes and body aches, she can’t look in a mirror without passing out, and the voices in her head have been urging her to do unspeakable things.

Fired from her job in New York, she moves back to her hometown hoping to reconnect with her past and inner self. What she finds instead are visions of terrifying, mutilated specters come with increasing regularity, she begins auto-writing strange thoughts and phrases, and her investigations reveal that these experiences are echoes of an infamous serial killer.

Then the killings begin again.

Mary’s definitely going to find herself.

2/5⭐ 📖 My Thoughts Wow, this wasn't what I was expecting. In my head, it was shaping up to be a psychological horror as it felt like the main character was struggling with DID. I'll be honest, I was wanting that to be the case but in actuality, it was more far-fetched. It was hard to suspend my disbelief with the outcome of this story. Personally, I find stories about mental illness invoke a sense of dread and the idea of reincarnation has never appealed to me personally. It's possible that I would have enjoyed this book more at another point in my life, maybe when I was younger, but I just wanted it to be over. The writing was really good and I can see why so many people loved it. Sorry, it just wasn't for me. ⚠️Triggers - animal mutilation - implied sexual abuse - verbal abuse - mental illness - misogyny - bullying -reincarnation - cult activity - vivid descriptions of blood and violence 📝 Special Notes I listened to the audiobook of this and before the story starts, Kassidy gives us an about me on why he got into horror and his inspiration for the book. It was such a nice touch learning a little about him, his mom, and his inspiration.
