This book elicited a lot of emotion; you could feel the couple's longing, passion, struggle, & pain come right off the pages (especially Hawke's). Their chemistry & sexual tension were palpable. Patrick was one of the most unlikable characters I've read. He presented himself as a good catholic boy, but in actuality, he was a selfish, entitled, cowardly, self-important prick who didn't care about Nic's feelings. He never once gave Nic an orgasm after all the years they'd been together (2 pump chump). He never told her Hawke was moving in with them, nor that he planned to accept a job out of state, and just expected her to move with him without even consulting her about it. That Patrick arranged for Nic to get raped to teach her a lesson was just crazy, then says this when confronted by herHe rolls his eyes. “Quit being so overdramatic. Those types of things can happen when you work in that environment. I’ve warned you about this.” At the beginning, I didn't like Nic, especially while she fooled around with Hawke and Patrick at the same time. He glares at me, through me, seething at the memory of Patrick touching me. He’s jealous. “His hands on you. Your mind on me. I saw it. Why the fuck you continue to put up with him and his shit is beyond me. I thought I knew you better than that, but I guess I don’t.” She was a total bitch to Hawke at the beginning and super judgmental. Nic/Cole did get a bit annoying at times, as she didn't see how terrible a person & boyfriend Patrick was, and how Hawke was a gazillion times better. Just the car getting fixed alone shows the difference between the two types of men they are. She takes way to long to dump Patrick's pathetic ass, but when she does, she does it in a spectacular fashion. Patrick got his comeuppance in the end. Hawke is such a kind, caring, considerate, and loving guy who feels emotions so deeply. Hawke is a genuinely good person who exudes raw sex appeal. He is shocked that Nic/Cole never had an orgasm before him, well, not surprising since he has no issues in doling them out. He was so sweet setting up a movie night, he had a ton of different snacks and a cozy setup on the couch to cheer her up. He checks in with her often to make sure she is okay after Patrick has been a dick to her. You feel so bad for Hawke and what he has gone through. The events of how is friend died is so heartbreakingly sad. Also, my heart ached for him since he thought for a while, Cole wouldn't choose to be with him. He is protective of her and doesn't want drugs near her, and warns his friend Kid against hitting on her. Hawke opens up emotionally to her; he's been so broken after his friend's death. He lets her know how he feels and is understanding if she needs time. He is just so unbelievably sweet & considerate. Such a great MMC. Omg Joe Arden as Hawke, he infuses so much emotion into his performance. One of my top favorite audiobooks. “You hate how I make you feel. You hate how you can’t stop thinking about me. You hate that the thought of me with someone else drives you wild, but you feel like you have no right to own that. Quit lying to me,” “Tell me you missed this,” he says in a pleading tone that almost makes my heart ache. I know how much he needed me, just by the way his eyes are barring through my soul. Gasping at his force, I try to form words. Words that fall breathlessly from my lips. “I missed it. I missed it so much.” “Cole. Stop,” he interrupts. “I’d do anything for you.” “Wreck me, shatter me, destroy me, be the ruin of me. I don’t care, just make me feel again,” he whispers against my lips. “Tell me you love me,” he demands, his emotional eyes staring through me. “It’s okay if you don’t...you don’t have to mean it. I just want to hear you say it.” “I love you,” I whisper, running my hand through his hair, playing with it between my fingers. His eyebrows draw together as his forehead wrinkles. A pained expression that shows me everything he’s feeling. “I’ve never said it to anyone before,” he begins. “Never felt this. I’ve never heard it fall from someone’s lips when they were looking at me like you are now.” He looks at me with the kind of look that would make any girl melt into a puddle of love. The one that says my survival depends on you. The kind that echoes, you are the most interesting thing I’ve ever laid eyes on.
