Girl, Serpent, Thorn

Melissa Bashardoust

4.35

Melissa Bashardoust's Girl, Serpent, Thorn is “an alluring feminist fairy tale” (Kirkus) about a girl cursed to be poisonous to the touch and who discovers what power might lie in such a curse.

There was and there was not, as all stories begin, a princess cursed to be poisonous to the touch. But for Soraya, who has lived her life hidden away, apart from her family, safe only in her gardens, it’s not just a story.

As the day of her twin brother’s wedding approaches, Soraya must decide if she’s willing to step outside of the shadows for the first time. Below in the dungeon is a demon who holds knowledge that she craves, the answer to her freedom. And above is a young man who isn’t afraid of her, whose eyes linger not with fear, but with an understanding of who she is beneath the poison.

Soraya thought she knew her place in the world, but when her choices lead to consequences she never imagined, she begins to question who she is and who she is becoming...human or demon. Princess or monster.

Honest to God I was tempted to give this a 3 star but the ending caught me off guard. However let's start from the beginning (spoilers of course) <spoiler>So we start the story off with Soraya (the MC) either telling or reading a story basically about herself since ever since she was an infant she couldn't be touched cause she's literally poisonous. Skip a few chapters we find out that there's a Div (basically a demon) in the dungeon that was captured by a commoner (Azad) so we go on an adventure around the palace dancing around her mother and shah (King) until we learn that the mother had asked the Divs for protection for her daughter and the Div suggested to take her to someone else.. it's a whole thing you'll have to read it. (Unless you already have 😂) Feeling betrayed, Soraya puts out the Royal Fire and basically let's Azad (revealed to being Shahmar) launch an attack on the palace.</spoiler> Yeah I decided to skip over a few things mostly because I don't want this to be a page long. During the middle part of the book it slowed down for a little bit as we learn new surroundings with Soraya. Overall I really liked the defeat of the antagonist and the, basically, prologue afterwards.
