Frankenstein

Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley

4.15

Mary Shelley's seminal novel of the scientist whose creation becomes a monster.

This edition is the original 1818 text, which preserves the hard-hitting and politically charged aspects of Shelley's original writing, as well as her unflinching wit and strong female voice. This edition also includes a new introduction and suggestions for further reading by author and Shelley expert Charlotte Gordon, literary excerpts and reviews selected by Gordon and a chronology and essay by preeminent Shelley scholar Charles E. Robinson.

*“It is true, we shall be monsters, cut off from all the world; but on that account we shall be more attached to one another.”* What I loved: ✿ creator vs. creation ✿ real-world parallels ✿ eerily philosophical At the surface, this book seems like it will be about the creation of a monster who will wreak havoc on the world it finds itself in. While that is partially true, there is so much more to this story than I expected. Not to mention the fact that I truly thought Frankenstein was the monster created; not the monster creating. Frankenstein, in the simplest of words, is a man in search of the meaning of life and will stop at nothing to achieve that even if it means creating a monster as ugly on the outside as he is on the inside. Much like Frankenstein, his creation desires the same as his creator but lacks the physical grace to attain his dreams. Frankenstein, so self-absorbed in his own ambitions and suffering, refuses his creation; thus, interlinking their fates. Highly recommend this classic! I have not come across very many classics I actually enjoy and don't want to put down, sadly this is yet another one that fits in the mix of not being my thing. It was ok, I am glad to have experienced it, but would not read again.

I never thought I’d cry over this book, but here we are! I was deeply moved by Frankenstein’s monster’s feelings towards his creation and life, and very pissed with Victor for not creating him a companion 😤 all he wanted was to not be lonely 😢
