Eat the Ones You Love

Sarah Maria Griffin

4.10

“Do you mind me asking—what kind of help do you need?”

After losing her job and her fiancé and moving back from the city to live with her parents, Shell Pine needs some help. And according to the sign in the window, the florist shop in the mall does too. Shell gets the gig, and the flowers she works with there are just the thing she needs to cheer up. Or maybe it’s Neve, the beautiful shop manager, who is making her days so rosy?

But you have to get your hands dirty if you want your garden to grow—and Neve’s secrets are as dark and dangerous as they come. In the back room of the flower shop, a young sentient orchid actually runs the show, and he is hungry . . . and he has a plan for them all.

When the choices are to either bury yourself in the warmth of someone else’s fertile soil, or face the cold and disappointing world outside—which would you choose? And what if putting down roots came at a cost far higher than just your freedom?

This is a story about desire, dreams, decay—and working retail at the end of the world.

"They move quickly in their death: they are beautiful, they are lush, then they are no use at all, emitting a ripeness that forces other flowers to bloom faster if they’re left standing around too long. Like an ecosystem of dead things, pulling one another further into decay." This is the stalker romance I didn’t know I needed. I love plants and this was such a creative way to give life to them. Baby was braided into the life of this story rooted in every crevice and seam with obsession and hunger when someone really needed to put Baby in the corner… this is about a sentient plant who I wasn't sure if it was going to fuck them or eat them but I was thoroughly invested in the weird ass relationships in this, as well as the creepy POV of this mutant orchid spying on all these characters and narrating their life and feelings. As an avid orchid lover and collector I appreciated the life that was brought to this plant and enjoyed reading its desperate need to consume and love these MCs while they try to navigate their own lives. I will not be looking at my own orchids the same for quite some time... 🌶️1.5/5 There is questionably inappropriate romance(s), and a little spice. "The path ahead of her was strewn with petals; the path behind rippled with flames." 📚 Reading Between the Vines: 📚 Click Here to Join a Fun Discord Book Club
