I'm often annoyed by Scottish-focused romance series bc they can be very theme parky and silly but this one was pretty light on the trappings so mainly it was just a very well done Victorian romance (some of the ones set earlier I'm more wary of tho 😂 I see those perilously draped plaids). I thought Ian's vulnerabilities and issues were presented very well and Beth was a great heroine. A historical heroine who is a) previously married b) had a prior sex life that she definitely enjoyed, complete with orgasms c) older than the hero by a fair bit, is really quite rare and refreshing (sad that I have to say so but it's true!) (The homophobia warning is bc of several characters who are homophobic about/towards queer side characters, two of whom <spoiler>are murder victims though the actual crimes were not motivated by homophobia.</spoiler> There's also description of historical conversion therapy. I think the historical attitudes, both progressive for the time and not, were conveyed with a fair level of care.)
