Dead in the Water

John Marrs

4.10

From the multi-million copy bestselling author comes a chilling tale about life flashing before your eyes—including terrifying scenes you don’t remember.

When Damon survives a near-drowning, his life flashes before his eyes. Every memory is crystal clear—except one. A dead boy. A face he can’t place. A moment he doesn’t remember living. At first he tells himself it’s a trick of the mind. But everything else he saw was real. So why not this?

With his waking life stalked by the disturbing scene, confusion quickly turns to obsession. Desperate for answers, Damon digs into his fractured past, and becomes convinced that the only way to remember…is to die again. And again. And again. When he meets a perfect stranger who’s all too willing to help, the stage is set for his dice with death.

But if this is what it takes to uncover the truth, maybe some memories are better left buried…

I received an advanced readers copy through netgalley. Thank you for this opportunity! I'm a huge John Marrs fan. Thriller can be a hard genre to show creativity and innovation but I feel Marrs has always brought a unique voice to the genre. However, this book wasn't for me. I think if the chapters hadn't been so short, I may have struggled to finish this but because of it, it felt rewarding to carry on. I saw the twist immediately and while that isn't always a bad thing, I found myself not all that interested to finish. I felt like the epilogue and final "twist" were unnecessary and ultimately made me more irritated than shocked. This is somewhat of a fast paced thriller, I do think it was drawn out but nonetheless, it did have me interested in certain points. It's not a book I'll turn my nose up but not something I'd immediately recommend either. I think if someone were to say they're going to read it, I'd hope they enjoy the ride and that's it. Personally, I think Marrs is at his best with dystopian thrillers and maybe that's where my taste lies as well.
