I was actually so looking forward to this and was excited to grab the ARC from netgalley. Thanks to Bloom Books for making it available~ FOR THE RECORD I did enjoy Kiss of the Basilisk (I read it when it was still Split or Swallow) - it was ridiculous, fun, and absolutely a guilty pleasure! I am under no delusions that it was ever great writing but I did hope and expect her to grow and improve as a writer and storyteller with getting traditionally published and a deal for (at least?) two more books. Alas, it seems my hopes were too high. Between Two Kings is riddled with inconsistencies and endless repetition. Tem, and everyone around her, reminds us she is a Hybreed at least 33 times, she has to learn how to petrify despite it being described as pretty much instantaneous before (and again after) she learns. (How would all the basilisks have petrified themselves in the mirrored shields if they had to actively do it? this is supposed to be how they lost the war in the first place?) While I can understand her two sides being in conflict with each other, it's 500 pages of the same thing over and over again: Temperance Verus is the best at fucking. Better than anyone else. No one can compare because she is a Hybreed. But is she good enough? Unfortunately.... no.
