This book gave off Stepford Wives vibes. The plot sounded good, but there wasn't much story to it. Also, there was no romance in the couple's relationship. I didn't find the mmc sexy at all but a selfish ass who enjoyed humiliating fmc and using her to fufill his sexual fantasies of what he believed a wife should be. He just gave off a big ick factor to me. The sex scenes in the book were hot, which is good since they comprised the majority of the book. mmc's checklist for when his mail-order bride arrives: ✔Plug her ass, who needs a ring on her finger when I can keep a plug up her ass 24/7 till death do us part. Tell her she may never remove it herself; she must call on me or one of my male family members to remove it if she needs to use the bathroom. (That isn't humiliating or anything.) ✔ Drug her without her knowledge with aphrodisiacs so she is horny all the time and can't think of anything aside from getting off ✔Gaslight, lie & manipulate her ✔Brainwash her to believe only I know what is best for her and she should always obey me, because of course, it is for her own good (diabolical laugh inserted here) ✔Make sure the drug is strong enough so any depraved thing I want to do the drug will convince her she wants it as much as me, maybe more. ✔Assert total control over her The thing that bothered me the most about this book is that Catherine is never told about being drugged with the aphrodisiac and is told she is in "heat" and that it is perfectly normal that she is always aroused because she is married (and looks like she will be drugged for the entirety of her marriage). It seems her sole purpose in the marriage is to be a sex slave without her even realizing it. If only the aphrodisiac was used initially for training their wives to be submissive and then used only occasionally afterward as maybe a reward/punishment type thing, that way the women could be themselves and develop an actual relationship with their husbands. But I guess if they were ever free from the effects of the drug they may run screaming from the town and warn any unsuspecting women to stay the hell away. As it was, I found myself constantly feeling bad for Catherine. To be continually in "heat" for the rest of your life doesn't sound great, and even worse, not knowing why.
