Val

When I was nine, I went to my first funeral. Along with accepting my father's death, I had to accept new and awful truths I wasn't prepared for.

When I was nineteen, I went to my mother's funeral. We weren't close, but with her gone, I became more alone than ever before.

Sure, I have a half-brother who runs The Alliance. And yeah, he's given me his protection—in the form of a bodyguard and chauffeur. But I don't have anyone that really knows me. No one to really love me.

Until I meet him. The man in the airport.

When one chance meeting turns into something hotter, something more serious, I let myself believe that maybe he's the one. Maybe this man is the one who will finally save me from my loneliness. The one to give me the family I've always craved.

Dom

The Mafia is in my blood. It's what I do. So when that blood is spilled, and one funeral turns into three, drastic measures need to be taken.

When this battle turns into a war, I'm going to need more men. More power. I'm going to need The Alliance.

And I'll become a member. By any means necessary.

3.75 ⭐ This was my least favorite of the Alliance series. This is more of a rant than a review, since I expected the MMC to be more like the ones from the 1st 2 books. Later on, he does redeem himself, but not for a while. Kudos to the Author, though, for making me feel what the characters were throughout the book. Dom was so manipulative throughout most of this book, which really bothered & frustrated me. He had an ulterior motive for wanting to marry Val, to use her to get her half-brother to let him join The Alliance. Going as far as drugging her so she marries him. You can feel her despair when she realizes he tricked her into marriage in order to join The Alliance. It was heart-wrenching to see how badly that affected her due to her issues of feeling unloved, uncared for, and how she always felt so alone. All she ever really wanted was to have someone make her feel special, loved, and part of a family. Though I understood why he tricked her into marrying him (once it was explained later on in the book), it did not make it okay. At least he knew from the beginning that the made up whirlwind wedding romance would blow up in his face, and he gives her some space, understands her feelings about it, acknowledges she deserves better & agrees she shouldn't forgive him. Then we have the other manipulative things he did by switching out her birth control, and the excuse that it's because she said how much she wanted a family doesn't work, he called the doctor to bring them over the first night they were at his penthouse. Also, drugging & tattooing her on her ring finger (her whole finger). Not cool, doesn't matter, she mentioned in an inner monologue, she always wanted to get a tattoo but didn't want to go through the pain and never could decide what to get. He didn't know that. She should have made more of an issue of these things. I hold grudges (I'm a spiteful bitch lol), so it annoyed me how easily she forgives him for his manipulations. I get she had some major issues because of her mother, but come on, girl, fight a bit more, get more angry, make him grovel. It really bothered me that he never even apologized for hurting her (emotionally). The only time he apologized was when he was shot and thought he was dying, he said he was sorry for leaving her when he thought he was dying. Dom starts to redeem himself around 60% through the book. Yet I am still a bit mad at him for all the crap he did to upset her. There should have been way more groveling on his part to earn her forgiveness. Dom at least never lied to Val (well, aside from 2 minor ones which he told her about) I do love that when he hears about her past, he gets super angry on her behalf and makes sure her stepbrother knows about it. Also, he gets super upset when she says she is not valuable. He makes sure that she knows that she is part of his family. I did feel his pain for her when he heard of her past and the feelings that elicited, which gave a glimpse of how much he cared about her. He also frequently tries to get her to talk to him about her feelings and always validates that she is allowed to feel anything she is feeling. He does truly listen to what she says & is understanding. OMG, the emotions she had over having him throw her a Birthday party, ugh. When Dom finds out about her past stuff, you can feel that he cares about her & has fallen in love with her. For all of his claims of possessiveness & obsessiveness, I don't feel it as much, like I did with the 1st two books (haven't read the 4th yet)
