In The Corsair's Bed
As a pirate, I tend to hang out with unsavory outcasts at the edges of the known universe. I'm used to running into thieves, assassins, and fugitives. It shouldn't surprise me to see a forbidden human female for sale in the tunnels of the space station, but I hate it. When I see she's near death, I have to act.
I buy her.
She spits in my face.
It's love at first sight.
At least, it's love at first sight on my end. I know it can never be, though, because I'm an ugly beast of an alien to her. The enemy. If only she knew just how many laws I'd be willing to break for one taste of her lips . . .

I absolutely loved how Tarekh found Cat's feisty and sometimes violent responses towards him funny. He sees her crumpled in a heap; she was beaten and in rough shape. He could not leave her like that, so he bought her in hopes of freeing her (so much as a human could be free in that part of the galaxy). Tarekh believes himself to be too ugly to ever attract a woman, so he doesn't hold out any hope that she will fall in love with him as he has done with her. Cat sees past his looks and falls hard for him, eventually, and is his staunch defender. No one better refer to him as ugly in her presence, even Tarekh himself. Cat is a fighter and has spirit, and needs time to heal from the ordeal she went through as a slave. Tarekh is the ship's medic and takes her aboard to treat her wounds. He is patient, has a kind heart, and is also a slob, waiting for Cat to initiate when she feels ready. Kivian had to change the ship's name from the Dancing Fool to the Lovesick Fool, which is quite apropos, with 2 of the crew desperately in love with their human mates.
