Compared to the author's other books, this one is lacking in chemistry between the couple. Ashley is hearing impaired and too afraid to tell anyone about it or get it fixed since she wants no record of it. She doesn't want a record of her being faulty anywhere, for fear of being deemed not worth the trouble or deserving of being rescued and of keeping the farm she was given. She would rather appear stupid. She is taught how to run her farm, but because she can't hear, she is running into all kinds of issues. Khex is called out numerous times to help her out, and he is very impatient until he is reminded that human females can process trauma in different ways and to try to be more understanding. He eventually realizes she can't hear well and promises her he won't tell anyone. He doesn't mind that she can't hear well. They become friends, but both want more and eventually give in to their feelings.
