I liked this, but it is not anywhere on top of my favorite Ruby Dixon books, which is disappointing because I was really looking forward to Bethiah's story. Initially, it seemed Dora was only proposing a triad for a sense of security so as not to be abandoned and not of any real interest. Dora is insecure through most of the book and feels she feels she is not truly wanted by either of them. In fact, this is a common theme with all three of them feeling like the others don't really want to be with them, feeling unworthy & insecure. I guess the connection at the beginning between them was missing for me. I did love Jamef, he was fantastic throughout. Bethiah doesn't think Dora is tough enough to take care of herself out there so thinks about giving her weapon like cyborg limbs, which Dora was not happy about hearing, leaving her some place safe, which hurt Dora's feeling and making her feel Bethiah didn't care for her. I love Bethiah's nickname for Dora, Fluffit. Dora is insecure of her place with Bethiah and tries to figure out how to earn her keep. Dora craves the attention either of them give her. A past relationship made Bethiah emotionally unavailable and not trusting in relationships. Bethiah is cray cray, commitment phobic, self sabotaging and has issues letting herself be emotionally vulnerable. Jamef is sweet, gentle, kind, patient and principled goes by a strict code of honor. The book was far too long, but not boring and didn't drag too much. She reminds me of a…fluffit. Those ridiculous, soft little puffball creatures on Homeworld that used to hop around on the ground and pollinate the low-lying flowers with their long noses. The same creatures that would panic and die, their hearts exploding out of fear, if you startled them. Fluffits aren’t in the wild anymore, because there’s no wild left on Homeworld. They exist only in contained, ultra-safe environments where they’re kept safe from the world outside. Only then do they thrive.
