3.5 ⭐ I enjoyed this book and plan on reading the next in the series. Though after reading I saw there was an even longer book with Luca's POV (same story), which vastly disappointed me. It would have been far better to make it one book with dual pov. Luca was likable from the beginning. Aria's father was an ass, dressing her up like a whore at 15 to meet her fiancé. Aria's siblings were great. I love how protective and close they all were of her. So cute when her 5 year old brother attacked Luca. Aria did get a bit annoying at times, granted, she was young and very sheltered, but still acting so frightened and skittish around him and being so afraid of him touching her when he actually showed her nothing to warrant that in his interactions with her. Luca should have realized he should spend time with her, allowing them to get to know each other to ease her fear of him and take his time romancing her a little. Though after the "incident," he did become more patient and caring for the most part. I did enjoy watching their relationship develop and how much he came to care & love her. Was not pleased to see Luca cheating on her (at that point they hadn't done more than kiss & he thought she didn't want him to touch her), though I understand that is normal in their world. Also, the author used that as an opportunity for Aria to see that she did like her husband a bit and might want a real marriage. I wish he had grovelled more, and she took longer to forgive him for it (or at least run away for a much longer period of time to make him suffer). I would have much preferred him to spend time with her and seduce her as a means to bring their relationship to the next level, rather than this being the catalyst. Also, Grace's banishment did not fit what she did; if it was only setting up Aria finding them together, fine, but that she set it up so Aria was drugged and could have been brutally raped, nah (bitch should have met with a serious "accident" over that). “No.” I glanced back and met his eyes. “When I claim your body I want you writhing beneath me in pleasure and not fear.” “Someone tries to touch you, they lose their hand.” “I wasn’t cheating on you if that’s what you’re worried about. I would never do that. I think faithfulness is the most important thing in a marriage. So you can calm yourself now, my body is still only yours.” I practically spat the last few words. “I only walked around the city.” “You walked around New York at night alone?” “I lied because I hate that I love you, because I hate that you can hurt me without ever laying a finger on me, because I hate myself for loving you even though you won’t ever love me back.” Luca released my wrists, eyes dark and questioning. “You shouldn’t love me, Aria. I’m not someone who should be loved. People fear me, they hate me, they respect me, they admire me, but they don’t love me. I’m a killer. I’m good at killing. Better probably than at anything else, and I don’t regret it. Fuck, sometimes I even enjoy it. That’s a man you want to love?” “But I don’t care because loving you is the only pure thing in my life.” Tears brimmed in my eyes. “You love me?” "Yes, even if I shouldn’t. If my enemies knew how much you meant to me, they’d do anything to get their hands on you, to hurt me through you, to control me by threatening you. “But you are my first choice, Aria. I’ll burn down the world if I have to. I’ll kill and maim and blackmail. I’ll do anything for you. Maybe love is a risk, but it’s a risk I’m willing to take and as you said, it’s not a choice. I never thought I would, never thought I could love someone like that but I fell in love with you. I fought it. It’s the first battle I didn’t mind losing.”
