Virgin River
"The Virgin River books are so compelling—I connected instantly with the characters and just wanted more and more and more." —#1 New York Times bestselling author Debbie Macomber
Welcome back to Virgin River with the book that inspired the hit Netflix series…
Wanted: Midwife/nurse practitioner in Virgin River, population six hundred. Make a difference against a backdrop of towering California redwoods and crystal clear rivers. Rent-free cabin included.
When the recently widowed Melinda Monroe sees this ad, she quickly decides that the remote mountain town of Virgin River might be the perfect place to escape her heartache and to reenergize the nursing career she loves. But her high hopes are dashed within an hour of arriving—the cabin is a dump, the roads are treacherous and the local doctor wants nothing to do with her. Realizing she's made a huge mistake, Mel decides to leave town the following morning.
But a tiny baby abandoned on a front porch changes her plans…and former marine Jack Sheridan cements them into place.

I like Call the Midwife and medical slice-of-life but omg there was way too much small town right wing California politics that felt way too Bush era accurate to put up with. This is definitely one that was laser targeted for the Conservative Military Wife market, like, <spoiler>yikes that scene where they all sweep the woods with guns in case there are (gasp shock horror) homeless marijuana growers lurking about? After the ML had already killed one man and fired off a rifle in an encampment to make sure they knew he Meant Business? I guess it is a point in the book's favor that the drug crazed vagrant who the ML kills for threatening 'his woman' was not described as an ethnic minority, but uhhhhh none of this was great I think! Btw having a man's brains blown out a foot from her head cures the FL of her totally irrational fear of guns 🙂 wonderful 🙂</spoiler> On the actual romance front, I liked a lot of the characters...apart from the ML who seems to be running a bar in the woods instead of getting therapy and definitely needs to not be around so many guns. I was also not a fan of the <spoiler>Infertility Magically Cured Via Stalwart Veteran Dick Plotline at all; I assumed it would happen eventually but in the first book????? The first time they have sex?????? Please.</spoiler> Kinda verged way too close to pregnancy kink in a way that was like...I would rather read something that was marketed as pregnancy kink in the first place because then I'd feel less weird about it. Also, not that I clutch pearls, but in my experience there are not Usually <spoiler>explicit sex scenes between a 16 and 14 year old in small town romance novels, especially not the first explicit sex scenes in the book about a 40 and 36 year old so that was like. Sure a thing. And the way the 14 year old girl was described as a dangerous sexpot temptress was Sure A Thing. And the way the ML handled the Manly Talk with the 16 year old boy was also Sure A Thing.</spoiler> I will not be continuing with these books but I might give the show a chance.
