4.25 ⭐ I really enjoyed returning to this world, but it was a little jarring to open a sequel that jumps 20+ years into the future and focuses on different characters. It took me a bit to reorient myself, but once I did I was fully enthralled. Ava's focus on microbiology was fascinating to me. Shifting into a completely different branch of Arcane Taxonomy was such a smart choice and it made the magiv feel fresh instead of repetitive. Seeing the world through a new scientific lens, especially one that I personally find so fascinating, added depth and reminded me why I've enjoyed this series in the first place. Overall, this was a great sequel and I truly hope there are more books to come in this series. Thanks to NetGalley, the author, and the publisher for the gifted eARC!
