2.5 ⭐ rounded up. There was so much potential here, but the execution left me struggling to stay invested. The pacing was vastly inconsistent and create a stop and go rhythm. The chapters in the last 10% of the book all seemed to end like they were the final chapter but then it kept going. The narrative itself also suffers from inconsistency. Tonal shifts, scattered worldbuilding, and plot threads that are frayed. With nearly 600 pages I would expect more cohesion and depth, instead it felt stretched thin trying to cover every little thing. There were so many elements that felt ripped from other major fantasy reads, but not in a way that felt like a fun homage. It comes across in a way that diminishes it's own identity to feel more like deja vu. Overall, there were moments that felt promising, but it was too long, too uneven, and not that fun to read. Thank you to The Nerd Fam for the gifted eARC. #wingsofashandflame #thenerdfam
