There's a lot of merit in the underlying themes and topics discussed in this book. There are some genuinely interesting ideas here and by the end everything does come together in a way that makes sense. Unfortunately, it was a classic case of 'too little, too late' imo. My biggest issue was the MCs, especially Fern. Even after learning more about her past, she still felt shallow and without depth to me. I really disliked her character for 60% of this book. That made it difficult to stay invested and I found myself considering DNF'ing it several times before deciding to push through. The ending does answer a lot of questions and provides some perspective for why Fern is the way she is, but by that point I'd already checked out. I can appreciate what the author was trying to do and I think others may connect with these characters more than I did, but unfortunately it wasn't for me.
