I saw someone else refer to this as a full season of Supernatural crammed into one book and I couldn’t agree more! There is a LOT happening. Kate’s characterization was complicated for me, and while I do think she was written to be unlikable, sometime’s she’s just blatantly…off, I suppose? The inhuman beings of the camp constantly keep her moving from one conflict to the next, and she appears so nonchalant in her actions that at times, it was like whiplash to read—like what do you mean you just poisoned a camper, or that you severed the head from one of your employees but it’s no big deal? Just a side effect of the job. Like what?! Still, there was a lot to enjoy in this read. I personally loved Kate’s interactions with The Man with the Skull Cup, and I understood her more as the story went on. Also, the whole Thing in the Dark sequence? Really cool. As someone who’s recently been very into summer camp horror again, this scratched the itch for me.
