Thank you to The Nerd Fam for this digital copy! This book is not what I expected and I appreciate it all the more because of that. When signing up for this book, I remember reading about a murder mystery and badass female detective, but somehow I completely overlooked the fantasy aspect—SCORE! I thoroughly enjoyed this story. Inspector Stacy Wise is a witty, funny, and sharp protagonist, except where her own love life came into play. Her relationship and banter with Krieg was great, and I respect that the sexual tension between them remained just that…for now, I’m assuming? (This is my first time reading about an ogre love interest. I’m curious!) I enjoyed trying to piece together “whodunnit” as the story progressed and new clues and evidence were presented. I am satisfied with the result. My one critique is with Stacy’s obliviousness. While I did like her a lot, that really got to me. Krieg’s actions towards her, everyone else’s reactions and interactions with her regarding him…girl, please. He’s into you! And I personally took her referring to Dr. Pepper as “Dr. P” as more cringe than quirky. All of this to say, I enjoyed the book and I would definitely consider reading more by this author. I’d love to know what happens next.
