While trying to find a book to read for a horror book club I’m in, I discovered this book. I was wrong about its genre. It’s not a horror, but a litfic thriller novel, and an intriguing one at that. We are thrown into the dual perspectives of Evie Boyd: her former and present self, her existence within the cult and the aftermath of it. Because of my misjudged understanding of what genre this book fell under, I spent a lot of time anticipating the night that everything changed, waiting with sick fascination to witness all the gory details of the cult and the murders. Instead, we are given a protagonist who appears passive in her own life, reflective of the girl she was and the roles she played and didn’t play—the ways in which we ride the edge of the unknown. It is a very introspective piece about girlhood, violence, and obsession.
