5/5 ⭐ 0/5 🌶️ Cawpile: 68 Recommended to: People who love dragon trainers and want to try something new, short stories, and immersive storytelling Tropes: - monster trainers - hunting beasts - revenge My Thoughts: I absolutely loved the characters in this book. Despite them not being conventionally likeable/popular, they had their charms. Darius wasn't talkative nor sweet, but I loved him anyway. They had their complexities, just like real people. And they evolved as the story did, their relationships changing and shifting with the trials of their profession. The "villain" of the story was a creature, Manticores. And holy shit were they terrifying. The way they were written and described had me shook, especially by the first appearance. The plot twists took me by surprise. Nothing felt predictable. I loved the idea of humongous birds, used for hunting instead of as carriers. The author wrote in an easily digestable way. No flowery prose or complexity for the sake of complexity. Author served that shit on a silver platter, I ate it up and the plate too. Right the very beginning you are thrown into this world smack in the middle of a pivotal moment of the mcs life. Chef's kiss. <spoiler>I loved how Zhara was written as nothing else but a wild animal. This was not a story of "wild beast turned docile". The roc was wild through and through, and there was no coddling or cuddling. You fuck up, you lose your life or your best. There was no "she loves me", because they aren't capable of loving a human. I really liked that aspect of the story, it created a sense of unease and fear at the whim of the beast's instincts. Zhara was loved, but nobody was fooled into thinking she was anything else but a wild animal. </spoiler>
