I didn't realize this book was a spin-off from another series. This is the first book I have read by this author. Nero is hiding his past as a criminal from Blake because he knows that if she finds out, she will want nothing to do with him and won't be able to accept the life he once led. He is sweet and caring once he figures out he wants a relationship with her (even though he burns down a portion of her house, including her books, in an attempt to prevent her from leaving town). Blake's insecurities get to be a bit too much because her father was a criminal in a mc, and she was born in a trailer park. Her ex, Brett, was an entitled ass. Her "uncle" Lyle was a violent, vile, and disgusting dirtbag. Devastating that the author killed Sam off he died selflessly protecting Blake, which made it even more tragic. His death is pretty unforgivable, and the book dropped in my rating because of this. I even put the book on a time-out because of how upsetting this was. It just seemed so unnecessary to the plot. “This is how hard you make me.” His voice is pure gravel. “Remember that the next time you’re questioning if I really find you beautiful.”
