I really enjoyed this, but it definitely suffers a bit from book two syndrome. It very much feels like a middle book, more setup than payoff, but Dani Francis’ writing is still addictive and easy to fly through. It still has those strong Divergent / Hunger Games vibes, and I would absolutely recommend the series. That said, I wasn't fully sold on the romantic direction in this one. I understand why it’s there and what it brings to the story, but emotionally it just didn't hit the same for me. I also wish we had more intense, emotional moments from Wren. Some scenes felt a bit too contained for everything she is going through. I also struggled again with how quickly certain conflicts are resolved. It makes some of the stakes feel lower than they should be. But I really enjoyed the new characters and dynamics, and there were plenty of “wtf” moments that kept me hooked and turning the pages. Overall, still a very engaging read. I just hope book three brings a bit more depth and payoff.
