The Sunbearer Trials
"Listeners will be captivated by the detailed descriptions of the cities within Reino del Sol and the fantastical beings who inhabit them. Santana keeps the tension in his narration taut as Teo wrestles with both physical challenges and his own feelings of inferiority." - AudioFile Magazine...

Marketed as a Hispanic Hunger Games x Percy Jackson type of story, I thought I would be all over this. However, the first 75% of the book dragged for me. I thought the message of inclusivity and acceptance regarding differing sexualities and identities was great, but some of the “relatable” lines of dialogue and overall characterizations didn’t flow well. Why did Niya talk so much about her boobs? My biggest gripe with this book, however, is the trials themselves. The timing of the first two trials seems completely unrealistic. Ten minutes to scale a mountain? Even with godlike abilities, I don’t think that’s possible. The remaining 25% of the book really hooked me though, and kept me guessing even when I thought I’d had it all figured out. For the most part, I did, but there was still a good twist in there. Especially given that I was really rooting for one of these characters… All that being said, I am probably going to read the next one.
