Ice Planet Barbarians #2

Barbarian Alien

Ruby Dixon

4.55

The second novel in the Ice Planet Barbarians series, the international publishing phenomenon—now in a special print edition with bonus materials and an exclusive epilogue! Liz Cramer swears she’ll find a way off of this alien planet she’s stuck on—then she meets Raahosh, the surliest and stubbornest alien, who won’t leave her alone, and she just might be okay with that... Twelve humans are left stranded on a wintry alien planet.

I’m one of them. Yay, me. In order to survive, we have to take on a symbiont that wants to rewire our bodies to live in this brutal place.

I like to call it a “cootie.” And my cootie’s a jerk, because it also thinks I’m the mate to the biggest, grumpiest alien of the bunch. Raahosh believes the cootie’s right, so he steals me away from the group, determined to make me fall for him—or else. He has no idea who he’s up against.

And if I didn’t want his insufferable self so much (thanks, cootie), I’d let him know exactly what I’m thinking. As it is, I’m doing my best to fight this instant attraction. Just because the symbiont thinks we’re supposed to be together doesn’t mean I have to go along with it.

And if we fool around a little, it’s merely biology. It doesn’t mean I’m in love—or that I’m destined to be his.

Okay so, I’ll admit; I regret waiting over a year to read this one. I loved the first one, and this one was just that much better. I *LOVED Liz and Raahosh. They were absolutely amazing together, and I think they really work. I think the enemies-to-lovers* thing could’ve been a bit different, but it did work well in the end. I’M SO EXCITED FOR KIRA AND AEHAKO!!! Their chemistry is amazing and I can’t wait to see how that goes. Overall, I give it a 4.75/5 stars, and I might read it again at some point.

4.5 ⭐ This was such a super fun, hilarious, and sweet romantic story with a grumpy big blue Alien MMC and a feisty FMC. This book just made me happy while reading it (aside from a few parts) and at the end I was grinning ear to ear. The banter between the couple is top notch. How Liz talked incessantly when she thought Raahosh couldn't understand her was comical. “Wanna take these off for me? I promise I won’t behave, but you don’t know that, do you?” I keep my smile encouraging. “Nice alien. Good alien. Come free the nice human.” He blinks. I wasn't crazy about Liz in the first book, but man, I loved her in this book. She was angry, stubborn, mouthy, and sarcastic; her anger mostly came from her powerlessness over making any decisions regarding her life. The way she cursed and kept blaming her Khui (Cootie as she calls it) had me dying laughing. She fights the sexual desire for as long as she can, and it is so amusing how she always says she doesn't want him to do "certain" things (when she is directing him to do those things with her body and hands), it makes him think that it is some sort of human mating ritual of denial. “I totally don’t want you,” I pant, my cootie purring so loud it practically drowns me out. “My cootie is full of lies.” Raahosh, my sexy, surly, grumpy, scowling, lonely big blue alien, I absolutely loved him. I would not be mad at being mated to him if I were stranded on an alien planet, hell, even if I wasn't stranded on an alien planet. Raahosh gave no indication he understood Liz when she was talking (all the time), until he slipped up and said a word in English, which, of course, is "mine". As we saw in the previous book, he stole her away and forced her to accept the Khui because without it, she would die within days, and he couldn't bear the idea of losing her. Raahosh initially thinks his Khui is an idiot for choosing Liz as his mate, one of the frailest of the sickly humans, who glares and scowls at him all the time. Who refuses his offerings of water, broth, and assistance. Raahosh is upset because he hears Liv say she finds him scary looking. He hides that he resonates for her from everyone before he skirts away with her. Her rebuffs of him make him very unhappy. He has always been lonely and yearned for a mate & family. He tries to be caring and considerate, even at the beginning. How he often says "my mate", "my Liz" & "mine" had me melting. Poor Raahosh is constantly struggling against the Khui's ever present overpowering need to mate with Liz before she accepts it. He loves Liz's fierceness, and her unpredictability amuses him. I absolutely adored how Liz went all out to fight to get back together with Raahosh after they arrived at the village cave. She is not above using underhanded tactics like being jerk and causing trouble to get him back. Her plans, especially the last one, are pretty hilarious. She loves and wants to be with Raahosh now. Seed of dissent? Firmly planted. I bite back my smile and sew cheerfully. If I’m going to be fucking miserable, I’m going to take them all with me. Both Raahosh & Liz are miserable and depressed after he is exiled. He is so resigned and despondent over this, while her mission is to plot & execute different strategies until they either let him back or exile her so she can be with him The narrators for the audiobook were terrific. Instead, I have the alien version of Grumpy Cat, and he just roped and tied me like a calf at a rodeo. Asshole. Anger flares in me. Does she think this is fun for me? That I enjoy a mate that rejects my touch? Does she think I do not suffer from the same khui-madness she does? That I don’t burn for her touch? To bury my cock in her wet warmth? Does she think she is alone in this? Or do I not matter to her? I have my tribe, but I have always felt…alone. On the outside. Perhaps it was because I never had a mate, or a lover. I assumed no one wanted me. Then my spirits sink. No one wants me still. Liz does not. Angry with myself, I stab the butt of my spear into the snow and use it as a walking stick. She will change her mind. She must. I…don’t know what I will do if my own mate spurns me despite the khui in her breast. The thought makes my very soul ache with loneliness. I will give her anything she asks for. Anything. Everything. I’m out for most of the day, getting food for my mate, and when I return, she’s still silent, but her mood is pleasant. She lets me feed her raw bits of food and doesn’t even push me away when I caress her cheek. I sense a trap. “Is it because I am ugly?” he asks after a long moment. “Is that why you hate being mated to me?” He rubs the scars on the side of his face thoughtfully. I frown up at him. “You’re not ugly.” “I am scarred. Surely you have noticed.” I snort. “I’m not blind. It’s a little obvious.” His expression closes off and he gets to his feet. I’ve hurt his feelings. Damn it, the man’s more prickly than even I am. I clasp his ankle to stop him, and he gazes down at me with those narrow, blade-sharp eyes that seem to hide all emotion. “You misunderstand me,” I say. I don’t know why it matters to me that I don’t hurt him, but it does. “I think it’s obvious that you’re scarred. You’re missing a horn. But I didn’t say it was unattractive.” I lick my lips. “I kind of like it.” I feel like a bit of a dick suddenly for constantly pushing him away. I’m probably the culmination of a bajillion dreams for him and for me to turn him away has to hurt. I’m starting to get an idea of how lonely his life has been…and what I must mean to him. Let him know that I don’t really hate him, that I’m just confused and unhappy, but that his smiles make the world not so bad… “Before you arrived here in this world, I had nothing to live for. I hunted. I existed. I did not look forward to anything. But now you are here, and you might be carrying my child even now.” His jaw flexes. “I know you are more than capable. The problem is not with you. It is with me. This world is dangerous, and I think of you, alone, out in the wild, and it is more than I can bear.” He stares at me for so long and so hard that I think his jaw is going to snap from grinding his teeth. “If I lose you,” he finally says gruffly, “I have nothing.” “Then we need to be equal partners,” I tell him. I brush my hand over his gorgeous, naked chest and then move up to his neck, caressing the back of it. “There’s no ownership. You are mine as much as I’m yours. Understand?” “I am yours,” he agrees. “Completely and fully.” “Then I can be yours, too.” He leans down and kisses me gently on the lips. “My mate. My Liz. You are my everything.” Yep, definitely hard to stay mad at that. “You are everything to me, Liz,” I say softly. “My world. My heart.” “Is that a declaration of love?” she asks sleepily, her voice muffled by my chest. I nod. My people normally do not declare love boldly, but I love Liz. She is mine and I am hers. “I love you, Liz.” “Unless you want to see a show of pregnancy hormones in full effect, I want Raahosh, and I want him right now,” I say in a deadly voice and point at the ground. “I realize you think I’m being impossible but you have not seen impossible yet. I will be the biggest pain in the ass on this snow-covered planet if you don’t get me my man, stat.” I don’t understand. Why are they keeping us separated? “Do you not understand, Raahosh? You’re my life. You’re my reason for living. When those aliens took us away from everything, I felt…lost. I’m not lost when I’m with you. I’m happy.” I touch his cheek. “I’m complete.” “My mate,” he murmurs. “My Liz. My everything.” “All yours,” I tell him. And it’s the truth. As long as I’m with him, I’m happy.

I didn't like this one as much as the first, but I still liked it. Liz took a while for me to like, she was often straight up a bitch for no reason. But in the end, I couldn't help but love her. The stakes in this one felt wayyyy too copy paste until after 50%. Bamboo fish things, metlaks, etc. But once i got past that, it was different. Will be continuing the series but I'll take a little break.
