Dark, clever, and utterly addictive. Fantasy mystery at its finest!! [b:The Tainted Cup|150247395|The Tainted Cup (Shadow of the Leviathan, #1)|Robert Jackson Bennett|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1735662086l/150247395._SY75_.jpg|125992890] was my favorite read of June, and now book 2 will be my favorite read of August! The atmosphere is still just as unsettling and dark as book 1, and I'm so here for it. Even with all the gloom and mystery, the subtle themes of greed, colonialism, and institutional rot enriched the story without making it feel too heavy. I loved being back with Ana and Din, and they wasted no time diving into another impossible murder mystery. They continue to be such a fantastic duo! Their dynamics balance each other so well, and I loved seeing Din's growth. He's not just "the assistant" anymore. We get to see him carry more of the work while dealing with his own personal struggles. Ana is brilliant as ever, espeically in the way she feeds Din information wihtout him realizing the bigger picture. This is a nice way to slowly divulge her secret to him. Overall, this is exactly what I want in a sequel! It raises the stakes, expands the world, adds depth to the characters, and delivers a mystery that kept me flipping pages way too late at night (or in this case verrrrryyyyy early in the morning). If you appreciate a rich world, complex characters, and a mystery in a fantasy setting, this is an absolute must read!
