I’m not sure how sold I am on this story. The premise was intriguing and the first part of the book was really well done, but by the time we got to the middle, I felt a serious lag coming on, and a whole lot of repetition. Towards the end, so much had changed that I felt a little like we’d lost the plot. I feel like the story would’ve been stronger if we’d kept Raikama as the villain and didn’t spin a “she was helping me all along” narrative. We got wayyyy too many “I’m so evil, look at me” monologues and a sentimental death scene that dragged. The writing itself is beautiful. Very scenic, very Ghibli-esque with interesting fairytale and mythological elements, high stakes, and mouth-watering descriptions of various foods. I loved some characters, hated others. Saw some serious change in our protagonist that I liked. Overall though, I just don’t think this will be a read that sticks with me and I’m undecided if I’ll continue the series or not.

4.5 stars. I'm marking it a little less than 5 because I wasn't expecting a good portion of the book to be spent in the North. I enjoyed the North storyline but also expected more of a physical "journey". I know that's my expectation but because of that, I can't rate it a full 5.
