I cannot believe I'm giving this two stars. Mary E. Pearson's Remnant Chronicles series was one of my favorites as a teen, so I was absolutely stoked to find out she'd released an adult fantasy. but this... was so disappointing to me. at the end of the day, I think my biggest gripe boils down to this: it really felt like this book was trying to do too much, and because of that, it did none of it well. there were points of view that I felt were unnecessary and side characters/plotlines that could have been cut, in favor of more room to better explore the core aspects to the story that we didn't get enough of. I wish the main characters had been given more lead-up to their romance; I wish the worldbuilding was more central to the story, and that it didn't feel like details were only thrown in where relevant; I wish more time had been spent on learning who Bristol's mother really was & why she was so disliked. imo, it would have made the book much more compelling. I could probably write a whole essay on why this didn't land well for me, but I'm going to leave it there. I really hope that others out there find more enjoyment in it than I did (or at least that the sequels really work to fix my issues with this first installment).
