I had high hopes for this, but it just didn’t work for me. The premise is interesting, but the execution fell flat. The book is repetitive, with the same basic structure repeated in each story. Unfortunately, the individual stories didn’t hold my interest at all. They felt slow and boring, and I struggled to stay engaged. By the time I reached the second half, I had to force myself to keep reading. Kei’s death from childbirth in the 21st century, due to her heart defect, felt unnecessary and pointless. It felt like the author was trying too hard to evoke emotion without a solid reason behind the plot choice. Maybe it would work better as a TV show, where the visual and emotional aspects could be more engaging. But as a book, it just didn’t do it for me.
