The Right Move
Ryan: I'm the newest Captain of the Devils, Chicago's NBA team, and the last thing I needed this year was for Indy Ivers, my sister's best friend, to move into my apartment. She's messy, emotional, and way too tempting. But when the team's General Manager vocalizes his blatant disapproval of my...

Oh Indy, how I love you. This is a re-read for me, and it holds up to my memory! Ryan and Indy are two very interesting characters to me, and I love the balance the author has in bringing both stories to light with intention; instead of having one just be the same as they were at the beginning. They are a couple that yes, got together due to circumstances, but I see actually staying together past the end of the book. I have mixed emotions on romance series that relies on characters from the other books, but this series does a good job of making it seem more natural then forcing them together for fans of the previous books to get a little crumb of their favorite characters.

Though I wouldn't say this book is a new favorite, I really enjoyed it! Whenever I pick up romance by a new author, I'm worried that the writing will be rough, the characters will be shallow, and the plot will be nonexistent. But this book had none of those issues. I really enjoyed the characters in this one. They were unique and three-dimensional, with realistic flaws that they had to confront throughout the story. I liked that Indy was a bit more of a stereotypical "girly girl" who liked dresses and flowers and socializing, and that her arc was largely based around learning that didn't have to change or dim herself in romantic relationships. Ryan was hardcore book boyfriend material: kind, attentive, and supportive. While I liked the backstory we did get regarding his trust issues, I would have liked to see a bit more on why he put so much pressure on himself to be perfect. Their relationship was a classic opposites attract, and it was written in a way where it made sense not only why they were into each other, but why they worked. My biggest issue with the plot was that, for some reason, the timeline was a bit confusing to me. Though it's easy to follow in being linear, I don't recall there ever being clear time descriptors ("It had been three weeks since..." "The New Year came and went..." etc.), so when the end of the story came around and the Devils were fighting for a playoff spot, it was a bit jarring. This is something that could have been a me thing, and it didn't really affect my overall enjoyment of the story. My one other issue with the plot was the epilogue. While I didn't mind where the author took it or where the characters ended up, I felt that it was it was too long. I'm not usually one to complain about a lot of detail, but we were given updates about every little detail of their future lives (including that their son is in the 99th percentile for height) and I, personally, just was not invested enough to care about that long an epilogue. Overall, this was a pretty good sports romance, and I enjoyed the representation (of both non-white and deaf folks) that it brought to the table. If I'm ever in the mood for a basketball romance, I'd definitely start by rereading this one.
