*✨ 4 stars ✨* OMG this was so wholesome—and my first book over 3 stars this month! Yay me. Guinevere, a naive but dutiful merchant’s daughter, finds herself on a journey completely outside the life she’s always known. Along the way, she’s thrown into adventure after adventure and into the orbit of a grumpy half-orc named Oskar. What follows is a story of choosing between the life she’s always been expected to live or one filled with adventure, independence, and a love that actually sets her soul on fire. I’ll be honest, in the beginning I wasn’t totally sure how I was going to feel. It leaned a little insta-love at first, and that’s not always my favorite trope. But it didn’t take long for me to get completely pulled in. What really sold me were the characters. They’re both so memorable and a little quirky in the best way, and their dynamic just works. Watching their relationship grow made this such an easy four-star read for me. The biggest thing is probably the insta-love start. If the relationship had taken a little more time to build—more tension, more hesitation, more earned feelings—it likely would’ve hit harder emotionally and pushed it into five-star territory for me. Also, it really needed an epilogue to make that lasting impact. But honestly, this has everything you want in a wholesome fantasy romance—adventure, courage, self-discovery, and of course a happily ever after. Plus, you get some really fun tropes like slow burn, one bed, and forbidden love… with just enough swoony spice to keeps thing from being too wholesome. A naive merchant's daughter and a rough on the outside man with a heart of gold? Peak. Guinevere could've been such an annoying fmc through her naive mindset of the world, but she instead gives such an interesting and kind outlook when constantly shown new things that she has never seen before. Oskar ends up becoming a favorite character when you see how vulnerable he can be, while still maintaining so much strength. Together, they end up being a perfect match. From an interesting plot to hidden secrets, and very horny characters, the plot of this book keeps you hooked throughout. While I am going to buy a paperback version of this book, I highly recommend experiencing the audiobook if you can!
