Legends & Lattes #3

Brigands & Breadknives

Travis Baldree

4.73

Return to the cozy fantasy world of the #1 New York Times bestselling Legends & Lattes series with a new adventure featuring fan-favorite, foul-mouthed bookseller Fern. This program is read by the author.

Fern has weathered the stillness and storms of a bookseller’s life for decades, but now, in the face of crippling ennui, transplants herself to the city of Thune to hang out her shingle beside a long-absent friend’s coffee shop. What could be a better pairing? Surely a charming renovation montage will cure what ails her!

If only things were so simple…

It turns out that fixing your life isn’t a one-time prospect, nor as easy as a change of scenery and a lick of paint.

A drunken and desperate night sees the rattkin waking far from home in the company of a legendary warrior, an imprisoned chaos-goblin with a fondness for silverware, and an absolutely thumping hangover.

As together they fend off a rogue’s gallery of ne’er-do-wells trying to claim the bounty the goblin represents, Fern may finally reconnect with the person she actually is when nothing seems inevitable.

Brigands & Breadknives follows Fern, a restless rattkin who leaves behind the familiarity of her old life in search of something more meaningful. Along the way, she teams up with the steadfast oathmaiden Astryx, and together they travel through a cozy fantasy world filled with unexpected friendships, quirky companions, and a few run-ins with danger. At its heart, it's a story about self-discovery, finding where you belong, and realizing that sometimes the family you choose is exactly what you needed all along. Brigands & Breadknives was the perfect palate cleanser after Morning Glory. It was heartfelt, wholesome, and ultimately a story about friendship and finding your place in the world. I previously read Legends & Lattes, and while I enjoyed it, the characters and story didn't resonate with me as deeply as this one did. One thing I absolutely love, though, is an interconnected series where we get to check in with familiar faces. It makes the world feel that much more lived in, cozy, and real. Fern completely stole the show for me. A foul-mouthed rattkin who's restless and unsure of what will truly make her happy, she's searching for meaning and where she belongs. That feeling of wanting something but not quite knowing what it is felt incredibly relatable, and I found myself rooting for her every step of the way. While Astryx, the oathmaiden, was a solid character, she didn't leave quite the same impression on me as Fern did. Even so, I appreciated that this story kept friendship at its center rather than forcing romance into the spotlight. And the supporting cast? Nigel, Breadlee, and Zyll were absolute delights. They brought so much humor and warmth, balancing Fern's guilt and indecisiveness with moments that genuinely made me smile. I also have to give Travis Baldree credit as a narrator. He gives every character such a distinct personality that it never feels like you're listening to one person perform every role. His narration adds another layer of charm to an already cozy story. This series has officially become comfort reading for me. I already want physical copies so I can revisit these characters whenever I need something warm, funny, and full of heart.
