3.5 ⭐️ This just didn’t hit the spot for me, I had no issues with it, I just wasn’t very entertained

Be wary. Be clever. Be good. When I tell you this book hurt me, I mean it (in the best way possible). It's been a while since I've been able to fully immerse myself in fantasy and One Dark Window made it so easy. Ravyn and Elspeth have my entire heart.

Though I spent the first part of this book pretty confused, I quickly became intrigued by the world building, diverse cast of characters, and unique magic system and history. The Providence Cards were interesting to learn about, their consequences so intense that I wonder if usage of them is even worth it. I have conflicted feelings over Elspeth as a character. Without the presence of the Nightmare and his (honestly impressive) rhyme schemes, she feels lacking. Ravyn's whole squad and their motives were fun to follow too. The latter half of the book, and the ending especially though, have me eager to read on and figure out how things are going to play out. The book has potential for me. I'm just not sure if I need to sit on it more or completely reread it.

WHAT WAS THAT ENDING!! I don’t know why I took so long to read this but it’s was so good and I love the world and the magic system so much! More thoughts to come

I only give it a four because I WANTED more of Elspeth & Ravyn. I do love slow burns and books where you are feeling the same anticipation as the characters. I felt that here but I just wanted more moments for them. Otherwise, I loved the world vibes & the magic! It was so completely unique to anything I’ve read before.

This was pretty good, it took me a minute to catch on and get into it but i liked the banter with the fmc and mmc, the cards and world were really interesting take on a magical system i hadnt see before. I also love poetry so those lil previews at the beginning of each chapter were fun and helped me learn the cards a little better as i read through. Some people said the poetry made some things too obvious, but i really didnt pick up on that. The spice was very minimal, but the tension was a really nice addition to the story, there was one scene that was a little spicy, it was fleeting, but afterward had me giggling all the feels lol. The end was good. I was not expecting that, I mean i was - not exactly, but reading it play out it was well done and has me running for book 2.
