Elspeth must confront the weight of her actions as she and Ravyn embark on a perilous quest to save the kingdom in this incredible sequel to One Dark Window, from the queen of gothic romantasy.

Gripped by a tyrant king and in the thrall of dark magic, the kingdom is in peril. Elspeth and Ravyn have gathered most of the twelve Providence Cards, but the last—and most important—one remains to be found: the Twin Alders. If they’re going to find the card before Solstice and set free the kingdom, they will need to journey through the dangerous mist-cloaked forest. The only one who can lead them through is the monster that shares Elspeth’s head: the Nightmare.

And he’s not eager to share any longer.

“But not this. You will not make a monster out of him as you did me, forcing him to give up a sister. Let go of Jespyr Yew. Or I will cleave your roots from this earth.” ~ Somehow this book was even better than the first one and I loved the first one I don’t know how she did it. The multiple POVs in this book were such a good addition, I will always love a multi POV book. I want to know everyone’s thoughts and feelings. Based on how last book ended I was expecting to get a nightmare POV here but the book was just as good without it. There were so many different relationship dynamics that had me laughing, sweating and crying. So many moments both past and present that absolutely shattered my heart. This book was even spicier than that last and I was absolutely LIVING for Elm and Ione and all their dirty talk. Give me more Rachel Gillig immediately

Good gods. This is how sequels are done!!! If you can make me love the second book more than the first, you absolutely win. I loved EVERY. SINGLE. CHARACTER in this book and usually I’m not crazy about jumping dialogues but Rachel Gillig made it work so beautifully. I couldn’t wait to get back to each one. The Shepherd King has my whole f*n heart. The only time I cried was for that beautiful nightmare and my heart aches for his story and the bond he and Elspeth found. Loved it so so much.

This was really good. I struggled at first with the multiple POVs, but after awhile i really started getting into it. I was a little upset to not see the MFC and MMC have a lot of time together, well “actually” themselves together, but the side characters more than made up for this. Definitely recommend this was a really good duology with an amazing magic system and story line. 🌶️ 2/5 Theres not a “ton” of spice in this, but there are a few scenes early on that are really nice. Its not like super detailed, but a small calm before the storm type of vibe. Tension is still there throughout too, but more like a longing.
