Ashley Poston

4.45

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER ∙ GOOD MORNING AMERICA BOOK CLUB PICK ∙ A disillusioned millennial ghostwriter who, quite literally, has some ghosts of her own, has to find her way back home in this sparkling adult debut from national bestselling author Ashley Poston. A NEW YORK TIMES NOTABLE BOOK OF 2022 "I LOVED this book! . . . Funny, breathtaking, hopeful, and dreamy.”—Ali Hazelwood, New York Times bestselling author of The Love Hypothesis Florence Day is the ghostwriter for one of the most prolific romance authors in the industry, and she has a problem—after a terrible breakup, she no longer believes in love.

It’s as good as dead. When her new editor, a too-handsome mountain of a man, won't give her an extension on her book deadline, Florence prepares to kiss her career goodbye. But then she gets a phone call she never wanted to receive, and she must return home for the first time in a decade to help her family bury her beloved father.

For ten years, she's run from the town that never understood her, and even though she misses the sound of a warm Southern night and her eccentric, loving family and their funeral parlor, she can’t bring herself to stay. Even with her father gone, it feels like nothing in this town has changed. And she hates it.

Until she finds a ghost standing at the funeral parlor’s front door, just as broad and infuriatingly handsome as ever, and he’s just as confused about why he’s there as she is. Romance is most certainly dead . . . but so is her new editor, and his unfinished business will have her second-guessing everything she’s ever known about love stories. did not expect it to be this cute!! but to have florence talk about writing smut throughout the entire book just to gloss over it should be an actual crime.

I'm actually unwell. I knew about a quarter of the way into this book that it would be five stars, but I didn't think I would love it and it would impact me as much as it has. If you asked me to name one thing I didn't like about this book, I wouldn't even be able to give you an answer because I loved everything about this book. I haven't felt this way about a book in a long time, so it was truly amazing to find a book where I couldn't stop reading it again. Overall, I give this book 5/5 stars and an easy spot on the Hall of Fame shelf.

“I hated that I cried when I was angry, or upset, or annoyed. I hated that I cried at the slightest flux of emotional nuance.” Ashely is very quickly becoming a fav of mine, I love the way she writes. I did not want to put this book down and devoured it all in one sitting. The romance between the two mc’s was so sweet and the despite the fact that the characters couldn’t even touch and the spice was very closed door you could still feel the chemistry and tension between the two. I loved the very real way that Ashley portrayed lost and grief through the story, while still having lots of light and fun moments which seems to be a theme for her.

The only reason I’m giving it four stars was because at times it felt a bit wordy and dragged out, but overall, this was so fucking lovely! It combined all of the things I love. A little mystery, small town vibes, quirky family dynamics, a charming love story, and finding oneself. Overall, a super fun and cozy read! 💖

What a fun read! I love the dark humor and the little plot twists, very cute. I think the only thing this was missing was, ok two things it was missing, smut and a sick revenge plot on the thieving douche bag... you know what I mean. I'm not going to spoil it, but much worse was deserved for that one little detail that gave me anxiety the entire second half of the book. Someone needs to go "Alice" on his ass... I loved the characters in this, they were quirky and well written. 🌶️ 1/5 - Lets talk about spice for 300+ pages, but never actually get spicy... lol what a tease. In a fun way, this was a really cute and despite the constant hint at everyone writing and reading smut, ngl it was lacking on its own in that department. This is a book you read for the romance, not the dirty sheets, and the romance was romancing.
