Ok… this was entertaining, I am invested. There were some frustrating things as more information began to reveal, I had to eye roll some of it, but it’s fine. The FMC is a lil bratty, justified to some extent, sure... It took a minute, but I’m glad she finally seemed to come to her senses and acted like she knew what was going on and who she was. It felt a little like she was trying and failing to deceive the reader along the way with some things, but the end was good and set up the next book nicely. I would give this a solid 3.5 rounded up to 4. 🌶️ 3/5 Theres some spice in this, early on and throughout, it’s a little cringy with the king dude tbh. Dude is SUS AF. Hoping for some real action in the next book with the prince.

I devoured this at the airport and on a recent flight. It has been added to my favorites shelf and I can't wait to dig into the rest of the series. I was completely hooked by the political intrigue and mystery surrounding Lor's past. Lor was such an easy character to root for, especially after everything she's endured. Her resilience and determination were admirable and the way she handled the other contestants in the trials was so well done. The world building was immersive without being overwhelming and I loved the way the different kingdoms, rulers, and secrets were introduced throughout the book instead of all at once. The romance felt forced and rightfully so. I can't wait to devour book 2 to get all the answers to my unanswered questions and learn more about Lor, Nadir, and Atlas.

This only loses a bit of rating because of the perspective changes. One character being first POV and the other character being third POV really threw me at first. However, I really enjoyed this. I did feel some parts were a little predictable, and there were some parts that weren't so much a surprise like you'd hope, but I was still invested and got giddy when my predictions were correct. I'm very much looking forward to the rest of the series!
