This is a story of perseverance, resourcefulness, and survival against all odds. It is structured through a series of logs and comms, switching points of view between Mark’s experience on Mars and the scientists back home at NASA, trying to bring him back. As someone who’s not very STEM-brained, a lot of this story was hard for me to follow with its complicated processes and logistics discussed. However, it was an interesting story nonetheless and I couldn’t help but feel hopeful at the end of it.

I’m so glad I finally picked this one up! It’s such a solid read; funny, nerdy, and unexpectedly emotional. The story dragged here and there, but the dark humor and detailed science really carried it. I didn’t love it quite as much as Project Hail Mary, but it still hit hard, especially at the end (yes, I got choked up). Honestly, having watched the movie helped me visualize everything more clearly, which made the experience even better.
