Soldier. Summoner. Saint. The nation’s fate rests with a broken Sun Summoner, a disgraced tracker, and the shattered remnants of a once-great magical army.

The Darkling rules from his shadow throne while a weakened Alina Starkov recovers from their battle under the dubious protection of the zealots who worship her as a Saint. Now her hopes lie with the magic of a long-vanished ancient creature and the chance that an outlaw prince still survives.

As her allies and enemies race toward war, only Alina stands between her country and a rising tide of darkness that could destroy the world. To win this fight, she must seize a legend’s power—but claiming the firebird may be her ruin.

It’s been a couple of hours since I’ve finished this and I think I’m able to articulate my thoughts better. I cried a lot during those last 100 pages. Throughout this series, I’ve gone back and forth between loving and hating Mal and Alina together. Now, I can firmly call myself a Malina stan. Their relationship is wonderful. Everyone who calls Mal toxic or annoying is crazy — he’s a genuine guy with genuine feelings for Alina; the only person who doesn’t want her for her power, but for her to be happy. What a king. And his sacrifice at the end of this? Holy shit. I sobbed so hard. Bardugo is brilliant for how it all played out. I wish I would’ve seen it coming, him being the third amplifier, but I didn’t and I am incredibly shaken. I honestly don’t know how anyone can love The Darkling. Yes, he’s brooding and mysterious, but he’s so toxic and that scene where he shows Alina the tree? I can’t. Bardugo’s a brilliant writer but that scene sold me on my hatred for that man. Bardugo’s just fantastic in general. I haven’t cried this much over a book nor had such intense feelings since reading “Clockwork Princess.” Well done, just… well done.
