The War of Lost Hearts #1

Daughter of No Worlds

Carissa Broadbent

4.29

A former slave fighting for justice. A reclusive warrior who no longer believes it exists. And a dark magic that will entangle their fates.

Ripped from a forgotten homeland as a child, Tisaanah learned how to survive with nothing but a sharp wit and a touch of magic. But the night she tries to buy her freedom, she barely escapes with her life.

Desperate to save the best friend she left behind, Tisaanah journeys to the Orders, the most powerful organizations of magic Wielders in the world. But to join their ranks, she must complete an apprenticeship with Maxantarius Farlione, a handsome and reclusive fire wielder who despises the Orders.

The Orders's intentions are cryptic, and Tisaanah must prove herself under the threat of looming war. But even more dangerous are her growing feelings for Maxantarius. The bloody past he wants to forget may be the key to her future . . . or the downfall of them both.

But Tisaanah will stop at nothing to save those she abandoned. Even if it means gambling in the Orders's deadly games. Even if it means sacrificing her heart.

Even if it means wielding death itself.

⭐⭐⭐⭐ 🌶️🌶️ Favorite line: *"Max," I breathed, touching my heart with exaggerated awe, "you think I'm functional?" A dancing smile glinted in his eyes. "I think," he said, "that you are breathtakingly functional.”* 📖 My Thoughts What a touching story with unique and in-depth characters. The way Carissa has presented Tisannah's language barrier through writing was A+. It felt realistic throughout the entirety of the story except for maybe a couple of times. In addition to her language barrier, she has vitiligo and lots of physical and emotional scars from her past. She is a total badass who I want to hug. Max is such a relatable introvert. He wants the world to fuck off, so he can vibe in his little cottage in the woods and tend to his garden. The amount of love, healing, and honesty these two characters brought one another was refreshing. The only thing was it felt tremendously slow up until the last 10%. I needed more action throughout. ⚠️ Trigger Warnings Graphic: Slavery, Violence, Physical abuse Moderate: Rape, War, Sexual assault Minor: Death of parent, Sexual violence, Sexual content 🌶️ Spice This is not a spicy book by any means. Yes, there are a few chapters when they are finally romantic that have vague spice/romance. That is not the primary focus however. The romance scenes were super sweet and almost too wholesome.

4.5 ⭐️ rounded up for Goodreads I have finally read my first Carissa book! I really enjoyed this one so much. It was definitely giving me throne of glass vibes which is my favourite series so I was bound to love this one! I loved both of our main characters so much. Tisaanah was endearing and has the biggest heart I love her so much. And then Max! He is so dramatic (relatable honestly). They are both so broken and traumatized and watching their connection grow as they start trusting each other is so beautiful! I am so excited to see where we are going to go from here and all of the emotional damage that I was promised from this series.

Look I love me a good "mated" claimy type of story, but this really was refreshing to see a MMC whos wasnt like "youre mine and I will claim you to be only mine and nobody better dare look at you..." - but more like "hey i know you're on a mission to save the world and all, but here let me help you learn things and heres a shiny trinket that I had custom made for you thats both functional and beautiful..." I just loved Max, he's a grumpy, gardener, hot guy, who wears all his emotions on his sleeve. The way he warmed up was so sweet and their little romance was too cute. Not a ton of spice, but the tension was there and I really enjoyed this start to The War of Lost Hearts series. I also really loved the way the MFC was written with her little broken english, it was so cute and she is fucking relentless with her badassery, I hope she unalives them all.

4.5 stars rounded up for GR ───── ⋆⋅☆⋅⋆ ───── This book was everything I wanted from an epic fantasy. The world-building is immersive, the magic system is fascinating, and every detail feels carefully crafted. It created a world that was easy to get lost in and impossible not to care about. Tisaanah is an incredible FMC. Her strength isn't just in her magic, it's in her compassion, determination, and refusal to give up, even when the odds are stacked against her. She is the kind of character you find yourself desperately wanting to protect while also admiring her resilience. But what truly makes this story shine is the cast of characters surrounding her. They each bring something unique to the story, and whether you love them or love to hate them, they leave an impact. The relationships, the found family, and the emotional depth are what made this book stand out for me. ⚔️ Expect: epic fantasy, found family, slow-burn romance, complex characters, rich world-building, emotional character arcs, political intrigue, and high stakes.

this wasn't bad, but I didn't like it as much as I hoped I would. there were lots of very interesting elements, but they took so long to start coming together that I kind of stopped caring a bit somewhere along the way. I would be interested to continue the series and eventually reread it, just to see if having a fuller picture of the series as a whole makes it easier to appreciate.

Daughter of No Worlds is a compelling and immersive introduction to the richly imagined world of Ara. Carissa’s writing is lyrical yet grounded, drawing you into a story that blends magic, trauma, healing, and slow-burning romance with remarkable finesse. One of the standout elements of the novel is its use of the Apprentice trope, which Broadbent executes with emotional depth and tension. The relationship between Tisaanah and Max unfolds with incredible patience, and the slow build makes their eventual closeness all the more satisfying. Max, with his secretive past and quiet love of gardening (a detail I was absolutely feral for), is the kind of brooding mentor character you can’t help but adore as he gradually opens up. Meanwhile, Tisaanah is brave, ambitious, and deeply compassionate—her interactions with Serel were especially touching and made me tear up a bit. The character work is where this book truly shines, and the emotional arcs feel both earned and powerful. The ending definitely left me intrigued to see where the next book is going.
